Supporting Active Ageing and Digital Inclusion: The “Hold On Be Strong” Erasmus+ Project

Across Europe, many adults aged 60 and above face increasing social isolation, limited access to digital technologies, and fewer opportunities for continued learning. For older migrants and refugees in particular, these challenges can be even more significant. Language barriers, cultural adjustment, and reduced social networks can make everyday participation more difficult.

The Erasmus+ small-scale partnership project “Hold On Be Strong” was created to address these challenges by promoting well-being, digital inclusion, and social participation among older adults. The project brings together TeneLearning (Spain 🇪🇸 ) and Welcome Home International (Belgium 🇧🇪 ) to develop practical learning approaches that support active ageing and lifelong learning.

A Holistic Learning Approach

The project implemented a 12-week holistic training programme in Tenerife, Spain, designed specifically for adults aged 60 and above. This tailored course provided a safe, engaging, and hands-on environment for seniors to learn new skills. The programme combined several complementary areas of learning:

• Digital literacy for everyday life
• Physical well-being and gentle movement
• Mental health and stress management
• Creativity and self-expression
• Social interaction and community building

Workshops were designed to be interactive, supportive, and accessible, allowing participants to learn at their own pace while building confidence and new social connections.

Learning Through Participation

One of the most important aspects of the programme was its focus on participatory learning. Rather than traditional classroom teaching, the workshops encouraged dialogue, peer learning, and shared experiences.

Participants were able to explore digital tools for everyday tasks such as communication, accessing services, and staying connected with family and friends. At the same time, activities such as mindfulness, creative expression, and group discussions supported emotional well-being and social engagement.

This combination of digital skills and well-being activities proved particularly valuable for older learners who may feel hesitant about technology or formal education environments.

Intergenerational Learning

The project also promotes intergenerational learning, encouraging collaboration between older adults and younger volunteers. These interactions allow participants to exchange knowledge and experiences while strengthening community bonds.

Young volunteers can support seniors with digital tools, while older adults contribute life experience, cultural knowledge, and valuable perspectives.

This exchange helps build mutual respect and understanding across generations.

From Practice to Toolkit

An important outcome of the project is the development of a digital toolkit and best practice guide. Led by Welcome Home International in Belgium, the toolkit will include practical resources, learning activities, videos, and success stories gathered during the project.

The aim is to help educators, community organisations, and adult learning providers replicate similar initiatives supporting older learners.

The toolkit will be tested during a Learning, Teaching and Training Activity (LTTA) in Brussels, where partners will pilot the materials and collect feedback before finalising them for wider dissemination.

Strengthening Communities Through Lifelong Learning

Projects such as “Hold On Be Strong” highlight the importance of inclusive adult education in supporting healthy and active ageing. By combining digital skills, well-being practices, and social learning environments, adult education can play a crucial role in helping older adults remain connected, confident, and engaged in society.

As European societies continue to age, creating accessible learning opportunities for seniors will become increasingly important. Initiatives like this demonstrate that learning, participation, and personal development can continue at every stage of life.

The project will conclude with a multiplier event in Brussels, where results, experiences, and the digital toolkit will be shared with educators, policymakers, and community organisations.

Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, “Hold On Be Strong” aims to inspire further initiatives that support active ageing, digital inclusion, and stronger communities across Europe.
